Welcome to the July Backcountry Music Newsletter. We hope you'll decide to continue receiving these once-a-month servings of band news, photos, studio happenings, and other tidbits, but we understand if you think it's more like spam and want to opt out. You can do it easily by selecting the Safe-Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the page.

We're thinking about doing a podcast. What are some things you'd want to hear in a Backcountry podcast? Live music? Interviews? Meaningless ramblings? Chris Jones's unlisted phone numbers? Let me know at chris@chrisstuart.com

That's the Missouri River at Cross Ranch State Park in North Dakota, near where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1804 with the Mandan tribes. We just got back from the Missouri River Bluegrass Camp and Festival and had a great time. As part of our ongoing Backcountry Tour of America we'll try to present a different national or state park every month. more photos

On Friday, July 28, I'll be interviewed on Internet radio for the fifth anniversary celebration of bluegrasscountry.org at 2 p.m EDT (11 a.m. Pacific), streaming live from Washington, D.C. Check out bluegrasscountry.org for more information.

In other news, CSB is a candidate for nomination on the second ballot of the IBMA award for Emerging Artist of the Year. Most likely, we won't make the final ballot, but it's nice be in the mix. And Janet's a candidate for nomination for Banjo Player of the Year! If you're a member of IBMA and vote for us, we'll come mow your lawn. . . .

Janet Beazley 5 South Janet is still on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart in July and moved up to #15 with "Julia Belle" from her solo CD "5 South." Dale Ann Bradley has also been heard performing it at her shows. If you haven't already, you can order it from our website. And Janet also now has her banjo workbook for sale on our site.

Janet will also be teaching at several banjo camps this summer including The American River Music Camp in Coloma, CA in August (w/me teaching guitar and songwriting), and the American Banjo Camp in WA in September.

Fun things You won't worry about being the nerdiest person in your neighborhood if you wear CSB ballcaps and t-shirts available for $15 each. The caps are high-quality flex-caps (one size fits all), and you can specify t-shirt sizes of S/M/L/XL. They're Hanes Beefy Ts and very comfortable.
Janet Beazley 5 South Backcountry is not just a band name. We're involved with raising awareness of the needs of the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation. Please take some time to visit a National Park and contribute to causes that support the preservation of the American wilderness and historical sites.
Buttermilk Pie Weird Stuff from the Mysterious Road:

• Chuck-A-Rama, Yes, the sign to the left reads Chuck-A-Rama Buffet. But contrary to its name, its the best buffet we've ever eaten at. Amazing food, and this one is in St. George, Utah. Thanks to Tim and Lisa Cretsinger of Groovacious for telling us about it!

• Snickers Salad - Folks in the upper midwest might recognize this, but it was new to us. You can easily eat way too much of this. Some people look at Snicker Salad and ask "why", I look at it and ask, "why not?". We had this up at the Missouri River Bluegrass Camp:

6 apples
6 reg. size Snickers bars
12 oz. Cool whip

Dice apples as you would for Waldorf Salad. Cut up Snickers bars into small pieces. Fold in Cool Whip. Chill. Gorge.

Seymour, Indiana. And in Bartlett, TN at the Lucy Opry, we performed one of our new songs "The First Train Robbery" about the historical first train robbery, which happened in Seymour, Indiana. I jokingly asked the audience if there was anyone from Seymour there that night. Turned out there was, Betty Westmoreland, and she put me in touch with a former mayor of Seymour, a Bill Bailey, whom I corresponded with about the train robbery. Seems a few years ago he tracked down the graves of the Reno Brothers (no relation to Don and Co.) who robbed the first train in the US. It's indeed a small and dangerous world. . .

D'Addario strings We're happy endorsers of D'Addario strings--the best strings in the universe.
